How Long Does It Take To See Results From GEO?

There is no guaranteed timeframe for a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) strategy to start producing tangible results. There are just different phases of results that occur within specific timelines based on certain factors.

Let’s look at the diverse phases of results and a realistic timeline for a GEO campaign.

Realistic GEO Timeline

• Early Signals and Citations – 1 to 4 weeks

At the beginning of your GEO campaign, you will not see big results. You might start seeing early signals like more visibility to your content, improved crawlability, and AI readiness.

During this period, your brand’s citations in AI-generated answers might not be consistent or regular just yet.

You will just start seeing some indications that you are putting in the work. Little glimpses of progress.

• Brand Mentions and Recurring Citations – 1 to 3 months

In the first few months, you will start experiencing initial AI visibility, citations, and mentions for targeted and specific queries. These citations will most likely be on platforms like Google Overview, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.

At this point, the citations and mentions your brand will get from AI platforms become more consistent.

• Stronger Visibility – 3 to 6 months

Within this period, your visibility keeps compounding. You stop being invisible in search queries that involve your brand and the products and services that it offers.

Of course, your content will continue to be regularly cited and mentioned by a lot more platforms. Your brand’s topical authority is clearly known at this point, and you start appearing in more queries.

You will also start getting referral traffic and generating leads that can potentially turn into conversions and sales.

• Compounding Authority – 6 months and above

After 6 months, your brand would have cemented its presence in AI training data and indices. This will give you long-term recall and a stronger competitive advantage.

You literally become one of the owners of the category.

At this point, you would have built enough authority for your brand to be viewed as a solution provider. This will make it appear in a lot of queries and gain more AI visibility.

You will also be mentioned in association with specific problems, products, and services in your industry. This will also improve your conversion rates as compared to organic search.

Factors that affect GEO Timeline

• Competitive Intensity

The competition in your industry plays a major role in determining how long it takes for you to see results from your GEO campaign.

If your industry is very competitive, it might take you longer to see tangible results because you will have several top brands to contend with.

However, if your industry isn’t very competitive, it will take you a shorter time to see results in terms of citations and mentions.

• Content Volume and Frequency

To get consistent citations and mentions from AI models, you must publish well-optimized content frequently.

The more fresh content you publish, the higher the chances of your content being cited and mentioned.

Just ensure that your content is internally linked and revolves around subtopics of a particular theme or industry that you want your brand to be recognized for.

You need to ensure your content clearly shows the industry you are focused on, so that AI systems can know how to categorize you and the fields to display your content in.

You can’t be writing about football today and AirPods tomorrow. Have a base.

• Content Quality and Structure

It’s good to publish fresh content frequently, but it’s not enough. You need to make sure that the content you publish is relevant, well-written, and structured in a way that it will be easy for AI models to cite and reference.

Your content needs to have a clear heading, short and direct answers, great summaries, FAQs, and a structure that clearly shows its hierarchy.

If your content doesn’t tick these boxes, it will take a long time for your brand to get mentioned in AI-generated answers, even if you publish fresh content every day.

• Current SEO Authority

Although many people don’t want to hear it, SEO isn’t dead, and GEO is a branch of it.

How long it will take you to see results from GEO also depends on the authority that your brand already has in SEO.

When your brand already has organic visibility and a strong SEO authority, AI answer engines have signals to work with, and hence, it will take less time for them to mention your brand in their answers.

However, if your brand has little to no organic visibility or authority, it will take AI models more time to cite it in their answers because the models haven’t seen enough from your brand to trust it yet. And it takes a while for these AI models to trust a new or “invisible” brand’s credibility.

• Technical Structure

If the pages on your website are hard to access, crawl, and read, it will take a long time for AI models to cite them in answers.

Slow-loading pages and broken links are other factors that can make it hard for AI tools and search engines to find your content and cite it. This makes it take longer for you to see results in your campaign.

• AI Platforms

Different AI platforms have different criteria for citing brands and content. Some have simple requirements and cite brands after a short time, while some have stricter rules and take a longer period to check and cite brands.

This could play a role in how long it takes for you to see results in your GEO campaign.

• Third-Party Validations

Getting mentions and validations from recognized third-party brands is a great way of improving your credibility and getting AI systems to trust you enough to cite your brand and its content.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know the realistic timeline and the factors that influence how long it takes to get results from GEO, you can manage expectations and focus on what really matters.

Remember, you can see signals and a few citations in the first few weeks of your GEO campaign. Still, it takes several months of consistent effort for you to establish your brand as a recognized figure in your industry and become trusted by AI platforms.
